Pistons come together

September 24th, 2009

My wiseco wrist pins were delayed as they were neglected in shipping. But I called wiseco monday, i have them now and have begun to assemble them. One pin feels stiffer on the rod than the others, that piston will be taken/discussed with Jim before assembly. All the other pistons are assembled on their respective rod with rings. I didn’t install the rods today as I noticed that the pistons have asymmetrical valve dishes opposite from one another. This is normal, I’m sure that this is how they were intended to be designed. I originally figured, “aha, the intake has longer duration, higher lit and a bigger valve, under it, should sit the larger reliefs”, then 5 seconds later I realized that the piston approaches the open exhaust valve a lot more than the open intake valve, I don’t know how open the intake valve will be when the piston is right under it. I don’t even really think it matters, but i want to do things as they were designed to be assembled. I’ll call around, see if i can find an answer. Shortly the head should be installed.

BTW, eagle rods do have markings identifying the rod to its cap, but it’s super faint.

If anyone wants to come by the shop, right next to my disassembling engine (from which you see the stock port), there’s an S85 also being dismantled for a future project, within 20ft from that, there’s 2 HPF cars (stage 2.5 and 3), a 500+whp AA e36 M, a 500+whp e46 AA M3, and a GPower e60 M5 twin supercharger kit in assembly.

So I cleaned up the block, the crank, installed the oil squirters. Finally, after much deliberation and redundant cleaning and needless safety levels of cleanliness, I installed all the bearings and put the crank in, started the torquing process of the crank. It currently sits at 50ft-lbs. The crank is well greased and turns very smoothly.

Engine on stand, disassembly begins

So I managed to get the engine off the dolly, onto an engine stand. The easiest method I found is to raise the engine with the hoist so high that the stand fits to the engine, then lower it down carefully. I also cat littered my entire garage. Took some pics.

e46 330 engine removal on jack stands

Last night, Tyler and Rafi came over and we dropped the front suspension and engine. Thanks guys, I couldn’t have done it without you two and Ricky’s help the night before.

The engine is out, after two real days of work. It isn’t very far removed from the car, but disconnected, sitting, er… sideways under it on a wooden dolly.

I know the new engine is coming soon, but not immediately, I need to take a number of parts that I will be reusing from this engine to my machine shop. I can’t wait for the new motor, it should be something special.

This is something I actually planned and to everyone’s surprise it went relatively flawlessly. I broke one stud on the exhaust manifold. This is normal, turbo manifold see very high temperature spikes. It wont be tough to fix. In contrast to most of the work done in the glorious garage of nonM, Tyler has a damaged right wrist, so he can only do light help and take pics. So this was documented more thoroughly than nearly anything else ever done with this car.

After the engine was safely on the wooden dolly, we called it a night.

e46nonM.com’s turbo 330 is getting a New Engine

Tyler and I started taking stuff apart the other day. We didn’t get much done, we weren’t entirely sober, we kept things lite; I took the intake manifold off. Yesterday Ricky came over and we tore down much of the stuff that needs to be undone before I drop this motor out. The front suspension needs dropping and then the guibo needs to be undone and it will all go DOWN!!! Can’t wait for Jim to finish my machine work. I’m taking a few things I’ll be reusing to him for some balancing and clearancing. I can’t express my excitement, pics soon to follow.
