e46nonM M subframe with nonM big diff

February 17th, 2011

So I pulled the traditional e36 big power diff trick. I’d like to think of this as the intelligent way to execute it in a e46. The right-er way would have been a e39 m5 diff. The m5 diff has a lot less mass under the pinion, and as such is shaped much more like the e46 m3 diff.

I’m really banging my head against a wall, the other day bf.c had a posting for a e39 m5 diff FS, $250/asking. That’s less than what I paid for the e32 750 diff.

e39 M5 diff:
-can sometimes be found cheap
-requires less or no cutting
-40% lockup
-drain on diff
-only one mount location, facing front (wrong direction)

e32 750 diff:
-can always be found relatively inexpensively. I got mine for around $300/shipped
-three possible mount points parallel to the axles, from the passenger side of the car
-25% lockup
-huge snout (bad, lots of cutting)

So maybe the upside of the 750 will pay off with more mounting and I’ll never have a broken diff bolt. My diff is held by two of the three available mount points

The PSI welder and I went at it… this is what we made…
I’ve driven on it a good bit, I’m quiet happy with it.

diff output comparison 188k vs 210k

February 17th, 2011

The 188k is the partially hollow, smaller output shaft

I’m not sure how successfully I really photographed this. Despite the 7d, I seem to only ever have the iphone on me when taking car pics. I’m awaiting the moment a slr has a phone in it.

here’s a quick comparison of the big diff and medium case output shafts:

Garage e46nonM has moved to middle of woods

January 31st, 2011

At this new location, there’s ton of space and there’s a list of things to get doen on the 330. Updates will at least include a mildly revised exhaust system, a new transmission, new clutch setup… I’m looking forward to it.

PSI-built, TT-tuned e46 330ci finally on the road again

October 30th, 2010

I’m happy to say that finally, I have gotten my kit built and finished and the only things left right now are: wiring in the meth system/boost controller, the a/c dryer and a charge to the system, and revising a few little details of the exhaust.

I just dynoed my car yesterday at a local dynojet, it made a best out of two passes, 414.68whp and 376wtq SAE corrected at the wastegate spring setting of 10.5psi
